We spent our time searching for the best package drop boxes so you can spend more of your time focused on enjoying the contents of your packages and less of your time anxiously hoping a porch pirate doesn’t run away with your new Fitbit—even if you don’t hate all the steps they’re logging for you.

If you’re reading this post, odds are that you’ve had to deal with a stolen package (or you know someone who has). There are many options for deterring and preventing package theft like signs, visible cameras, gates, and package drop boxes. The truth is, signs are only minor deterrents, and cameras may help you retrieve a stolen package, but they aren’t as good at preventing the theft. Parcel drop boxes are one of the most effective solutions for preventing package theft— and it will pay for itself when it prevents just one high-value package from being stolen.

Below we’ll give you the rundown on the five best package drop boxes, with a drawback or two worth considering for each. But before we get into the details, here are a few things to consider when buying your parcel drop box.

  1. Make sure you choose a box that works with your space. Some boxes may be too big for your space, some may be constructed to install in a way that doesn’t work for your home, some may not come in a color scheme that you find appealing, and some may be more permanent than you prefer.

  2. For optimal use of a parcel drop box, make sure your delivery person knows where it is and how to access it if it’s locked. You can create a free account with all of the major carriers and define your delivery instructions. USPS Informed Delivery®, UPS My Choice®, and FedEx Delivery Manager® are three of the main carriers’ services dedicated to managing your package deliveries.

  3. Most package drop boxes will come with a secure latch for padlocks. While a traditional combination lock might induce some fun high-school nostalgia, lock technology has come a long way since your days of lockers and letterman jackets. We recommend you consider using BoxLock, which is a Wi-Fi enabled lock with a built-in scanner that will open only when delivery drivers scan packages that are for you. You can also track and manage all of your packages through the BoxLock app.

Best Low-Price: A Package Drop Box Under $100

Step2 Deluxe Package Delivery Box

Amazon Rating: 4.7 / 5

The Rundown

If you’re looking for a simple, cost-effective parcel drop box that gets the job done, the Step2 Deluxe Package Delivery Box is a solid option that will help prevent stolen packages without sacrificing curb appeal. This parcel drop box has a hinged lid, a BoxLock-compatible latch, and a sturdy resin construction, which means your packages will be protected from both porch pirates and the elements. This package drop box also has the largest capacity of all the boxes on this list—capable of holding packages up to 25 x 15 x 18 inches.

Drawbacks

This parcel drop box isn’t equipped with any way to bolt it down. For some, that portability is a pro because you don’t have to leave it outside every day if you don’t get that many packages. For others, its portability is a con because a porch pirate could just steal the whole thing. However, thieves are less likely to risk even approaching the box to find out if anything is in it. They’re usually after sure opportunities that allow them to get away quickly.

Specs

  • Color Options: Elegant Black, Estate White, Manor Gray, Rich Mocha

  • Dimensions: 19.1 x 23.1 x 32.3 inches

  • Weight: 16 pounds

  • Construction: Resin

Best Curb Appeal: The Prettiest Package Drop Box

Architectural Mailboxes 6900B Elephantrunk Parcel Drop Box

Amazon Rating: 4.0 / 5

The Rundown

While this parcel drop box easily won us over for its sleek, discerning design, it’s more than just easy on the eyes. The 6900B Elephantrunk is essentially your own private post office box. It has a spacious interior that features a rotating drum big enough to hold multiple packages and an added partition to allow for outgoing shipments. Additionally, it features cast aluminum and galvanized steel construction, a pry-resistant three-point lock system, and protection from the elements. If you want added security, you can bolt the whole thing to the ground.

Drawbacks

We had to stretch a little on a drawback for this box. But as with many package drop boxes, there will always be package size restrictions. The Elephantrunk holds decently sized packages (roughly 11.5 x 9.3 x 7.3 inches), but you’ll have to find another solution when you order larger items.

Specs

  • Color Options: Black, Red, Rubbed Bronze, White

  • Dimensions: 16 x 17 x 37.2 inches

  • Weight: 40 pounds

  • Construction: Cast aluminum and galvanized steel

Best Innovation: A New and Unique Package Drop Box

The Porch Pirate Chest

Amazon Rating: None yet. We’ll update when there are some!

The Rundown

This lightweight, collapsible chest easily mounts to an exterior wall or temporarily attaches to your door. Once you have retrieved your package, you can easily collapse it back onto the wall or hide it away in a closet. And if you don’t want to attach it to a wall or a door, the Porch Pirate Chest also comes with a lockable cable and combination lock. See our full-length review on the Porch Pirate Chest, here.

Drawbacks

One of the main drawbacks of this package drop box is that porch pirates can easily see if there is a package inside. We also aren’t huge fans of how this looks on your porch. You’ll have to decide if you value ease and portability over aesthetics.

Specs

  • Color Options: Silver

  • Dimensions: 22 x 11 x 16.5 inches

  • Weight: Not listed

  • Construction: Stainless steel

Best Low-Profile Design: The Slimmest Package Drop Box

PEELCO 19” Package Delivery Box

Amazon Rating: 4.3 / 5

The Rundown

This low-profile package drop box has it all. The PEELCO Package Delivery Box functions as both a secure package receptacle and a traditional mailbox—great for accepting mail from the USPS and packages from FedEx or UPS. Constructed with rust-resistant galvanized steel, you can rest assured your packages and mail will be protected from both theft and the elements. Your delivery person won’t even need to unlock or lock the box. With a simple flip-top opening, they can drop and go. And the contents of your box are protected by a guard rail under the opening, which prevents anyone from accessing mail or packages through the drop slot. The main package receptacle can only be accessed using a unique key (4 keys included). On top of durability and functionality, the PEELCO also looks great mounted onto the exterior of your home.

Drawbacks

As you may have guessed, the main drawback of this option is size. However, it’s not as much the size of the container as it is the size of the opening. The opening at the top (listed as 2.5 x 5 inches) is not as deep as the box itself, so the max parcel size for this option is only 2.5 x 5 x 10 inches.

Specs

  • Color Options: Black, (manufacturer is considering more color options for 2019)

  • Dimensions: 14.5 x 5.4 x 13.8 inches

  • Weight: 5.45 pounds

  • Construction: Galvanized steel

Best Strength: The Toughest Package Drop Box

TuffBoxx ParcelBoxx

Amazon Rating: None yet. We’ll update when there are some!

The Rundown

If strength and protection are the main features you care about in a package drop box, the TuffBoxx ParcelBoxx offers the durability you’re looking for. No fancy bells and whistles here—just heavy gauge galvanized steel with a weather-proof lid and a lockable latch that is compatible with BoxLock. You can mount the TuffBoxx ParcelBoxx to the ground or the wall for added security.

Drawbacks

While the galvanized steel has been powder coat painted as a finishing touch, it’s just a basic-looking box that won’t elicit any outbursts of awe from friends and family. If you like pretty things, we suggest going another route—unless you see its raw, durable exterior as a canvas for your art.

Specs

  • Color Options: Silver Hammertone

  • Dimensions: 18 x 12 x 22 inches

  • Weight: 34 pounds

  • Construction: Galvanized steel (16 Ga)
